Fall & Football

What a wonderful holiday weekend it was – hope everyone had an enjoyable, memorable time. We didn't do much either Saturday or Sunday – Monday we made a trip to Marshall. It was a great time at Dollar Tree (isn't it always!), I was very disappointed to find Aldi's was closed, but we finished up at Walmart. We came home and got that raggedy yard mowed. That was it – our exciting holiday.

Today's weather was lucious. It started cooling down yesterday. When we got up this morning, the temp was stretching to reach 60. It was gorgeous, sunny, and cooler all day. We were able to walk outside in the park this morning........there are still some nasty allergens in the air, so we had to turn on the a/c this afternoon and do our afternoon walk inside.

I got back into my online class today, after giving myself a couple of days off. I finished up my paper for Week 4 and turned it in, then started on Week 5. The good news for me is that there are only six weeks in the class. The bad news is that we're running ahead - and even if I get Week 6 done, the final won't be available online until September 27. I guess that'll give me plenty of time to get my notes organized – I haven't had the time to do that for the past three weeks of the course.

We took another step toward being financially prepared to being done with our unemployment benefits today – and for me, it was a painful step. We cut back on our DirecTV package. You need to understand that I'm a TV addict. Understand also that the NFL season starts Thursday. The past few years, we've enjoyed the many channels of the Choice Xtra package – plus NFL Sunday Ticket during the fall. It was hard enough to drop back the first level and to know that we wouldn't have Sunday Ticket this year. That's okay, I can deal. That meant no Thursday night football on the NFL Channel, and no multiple games and End Zone on Sundays. But with today's realignment, we also lost ESPN for Monday Night Football. I'm so in mourning!!

Hubby assures me there is so much online now that it shouldn't be an issue. We already know that we can pick up the Thursday Night Football online – all we have to do it hook up the HDMI cable to the TV, pop the game on the computer, and we're there! Hopefully we'll be able to do the same with Monday Night Football and with the Sunday games that are not on local channels.

Hubby was so happy in our early dating days to find out that I'm a football fiend. Even for the first five years of our marriage, when he was working five hours away from here and we had a “commuter marriage”, we would get on the phone on Sunday afternoons and watch the games together.

Mama, on the other hand, can't figure out where I came from. She enjoys baseball. She enjoys watching the big horse races in the spring. I think she's okay with basketball. But she's not really a football fan. We didn't have football at our high school. Older daughter can't figure out where I came from either – or maybe she can't figure out where SHE came from! She is NOT a football fan. Baseball yes – she enjoys going to the games. She played softball, soccer, and volleyball as a kid. She's even been known to go to a hockey game. But not football. I do think it's on their TV for her hubby and son to watch.

Son – oh, yeah, he's a chip off the old block! He loves football and has been known to text me when a big play happens. Lucky for him, his wife's a football fanatic too....and so's their son. I'm not sure about their 8-year-old, but she loves her ballet class. And younger daughter and her hubby watch as well. I don't think they're quite as fanatic as I am, but that's okay.

So, on Thursday night we'll have the computer hooked up to the TV via HDMI cable. And on Sunday, I'll put on my Glen Dorsey Chiefs jersey (those who know me well will understand why I got a Glen Dorsey jersey!), root for the rejuvenated Chiefs, and hope that maybe we can find something online for the other games. Monday night will remain to be seen, but wish me luck!! Happy football.
