Taxes & Onion Rings

We had a lovely morning. We went to the County Courthouse and then to Town Hall and paid our yearly property taxes. It's a chore I hate doing (along with everyone else in the county!), but I like to get it over with and put it in my rearview mirror.

Since we're not busy at work this year, I decided it was financially prudent to pay in person. It saved postage. There was no line at either office, and I was able to chat a few minutes with a friend who now works in the County Treasurer's office.

So, that chore is done for another year. I'd much rather live in a state that doesn't have property taxes!! Of course, that might mean we would lose out on other fronts. As much as I detest taxes, I guess they truly are a necessary evil.

We've had some warm days recently. It was quite foggy this morning. I think we have one more warm day before it turns cold again. The warm days are so nice, but the bouncing back and forth makes it harder to adjust to the colder days.

Our sunny Saturday made a nice day to take Mom to the cemetery to put out Christmas flowers. Since we have developed a routine with our trips to the cemetery, it meant lunch at Burger Bar. Their food is always so good, but it seemed even better than usual Saturday! Maybe the fresh air had just made us hungry, but we all felt the same way.

Burger Bar and Dari Maid were such a part of the fabric of my childhood. You just couldn't go there without getting a beef burger and a chocolate malt. We only made it to town once a week. That made for some hard decisions when I became a teenager.

By then, there was a Dog 'n Suds in town. And it had become “the” place to eat, if you were a teenager. They were a true drive-in, with carhops who came out for your order and delivered your food on a tray that hooked over the car window. They had coney dogs and root beer in frosted mugs. It became a part of the Teenage Cruise Route of its day........around the square, south on Main Street and circle through Burger Bar/Dari Maid, then down the street and circle through Dog 'n Suds.

I know it probably took a bit of talking to get Mom and Dad to try the new spot, but I remember that we went there a bit. The other business that tore me away from Burger Bar when I was a teen was The Golden Cone. The unique quality that Golden Cone had was onion rings - neither of the other spots had onion rings. Once I tasted them, it was love at first bite.

I can happily report that, even though Golden Cone and Dog 'n Suds are no longer here, Burger Bar now had onion rings. I don't have them often, but I know where I can get some when the need arises!

Hopefully now I can relax and really start to enjoy the holiday season, with those dratted property taxes taken care of!
