It was, undeniably, another gorgeous day in North Central Missouri......80+, bright sunshine, and a beautiful breeze. You just couldn't ask for better. We really didn't make hay, of course, but we did mow the yard - that makes 3 times already!! But it's a lot nicer when I don't have to layer with a sweatshirt and long johns like I did a couple of weeks ago!
I spent a lot of the afternoon in one of my favorite places, the kitchen. I sliced up four pounds of yummy strawberries and did some other kitchen chores. That always puts me in a good mood! All in all, it was a pretty busy day. The only times I sat and caught my breath were to watch "The Chew" at noon, and then to catch my secret vice (Judge Judy) at 4. Enjoyed catching up via phone with my "baby" as she drove home from work in Downtown KC to Parkville.
Tomorrow is the first of May - can you believe it??? By the end of this week, we'll have hit the three-month mark of our unexpected retirement. We're still enjoying our time together, but once in a while we get a little antsy about the lack of jobs out there. When we were at the Career Center yesterday, a school-days friend who works there was asking us how things were going. We told her that we were getting very little response.....in fact, in making two contacts per week since this started, only three employers have let me know they received my resume. She told us that she was hearing the same story from so many people - it seems jobs are so scarce that employers are inundated with resumes and they're not taking the time to respond.
I don't want to be Debbie Downer here, but that's so scary. I can't imagine being a young person just out of school trying to find a job now. And as I've said before, that makes being unemployed at 60 more scary than usual! Most days I feel like I'm only 30 or so.......reality says something totally different. And if I were a manager, would I hire me? I'm not sure. I know I have a ton of experience, but that same experience dates me. Even though I'd never really planned to retire at 62 (or 60!), will someone really be willing to take a chance on someone who could be retiring soon? I know what I think.......and that's all I have to say about that, Forrest!
I hope everyone had a wonderful day - I appreciate all the feedback I've had recently on the blog. I never know when I sit down at the computer what's going to come out of my fingertips, so I look forward to it to!!

Summer Tease
This evening I'm sitting here, windows and doors opened wide, enjoying 80+ degree weather!! Oh, yes, a summer tease is here!!! It was mid 70's yesterday, will be 80+ tomorrow and Wednesday.........mmmmm.....then we drop to the low 40's with rain in the forecast and possibly some overnight snow. Snow? In May? That's what they say - we can only hope they're wrong!
We had a nice trip today to report in at the Career Center, as mandated by Unemployment. It was a good day to get out for a drive. Now that hubby has his mandatory workshop over with, checking in only takes about five minutes.
I reminisced last week about the weekly trips "to town" in my childhood......today's trip to Chillicothe brings back more memories. Chillicothe was a whopping 30 miles from the farm, so we only made that trip a few times a year. But I could usually count on getting there before school started. Honestly, I can't really remember what stores we would frequent there in our search for school clothes......I know there was a JC Penny, but maybe it had more stock than the local one. I vaguely remember getting shoes up there. It was always such a big deal just to go. They had a Woolworth's on the square, lunch counter and all. As I got older and was into music, we had an annual trip in the spring for District Music Contest at Chillicothe High School. We were on our own for lunch, and we always crossed our fingers that we had enough of a break in the middle of the day that we could hike to the square and have lunch. There was a restaurant called The Copper Kettle that had killer tenderloins! Many students from participating schools had the same idea, so occasionally we would have to eat at Woolworth's if the wait line was too long at Copper Kettle. It was a real disappointment my senior year when District Contest was moved to Trenton.......it's almost 60 miles away, so I'd never been there. And there was no Copper Kettle.
I was fortunate enough to attend State Music Contest on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus my sophomore and junior years as accompanist. THAT was an experience, let me tell you! My junior year we had a fun music teacher who had just graduated from college - she thought we should all see the columns on the MU Campus (the only remnants left from a campus building fire years ago). I remember her double parking and staying in her car in case a campus cop happened by while the rest of us ran out and took photos by the columns. I was so sad when she left after the school year and left us with a not-so-fun music teacher for my senior year.
Time marches on, and I'm so glad I have those good memories.
If you're having "summer tease" weather this week, enjoy it!

F-F-F-Fri-daay!
TGIF, for those of you in the Monday thru Friday work world.......sorry 'bout that, to those of you who work other schedules! We did check with each other a couple of times today to make sure what day it was, but for no particular reason.
Friday was always a cool day when I was a kid - mostly because I had the excitement of knowing we would make our weekly trek to "town" for shopping/groceries on Saturday. "Town" was 20 miles away, so we didn't take the time or use the gasoline to make that trip any more often than necessary. And it was such a fun trip. We always started out checking out things on the square. In those days, the square was a bustling place on Saturdays. Every building was occupied, as well as a block in every direction off the square. At times, we had three grocery stores. On the square, there was JC Penney, Mattingly's 5 & 10, Weinhold's, two jewelry stores, a shoe store, hardware store, Western Auto, a couple of the more hoity-toity women's clothing stores (translation: we couldn't afford them), and one men's store. There were three pharmacies, one with a soda fountain in the back. For awhile there was a fabric store, but you could also buy fabric at JC Penney. Oh, yes, there was also Mode O'Day ladies' clothing store. JC Penney was always a stop for us - as I got older and was making my own school clothes, I always had to check out the fabric and patterns. Mattingly's was another stop. You could always find something fun in there, and they were the only store that sold records - 45's for, I think, 75 cents, and LP's for $4 or less, depending on how "hot" the album was. Weinhold's had a great candy counter, with all unusual types of inexpensive candies, cinnamon toothpicks, and the like. They also had piano sheet music, and the weekly Top 40 list from "Seventy-Wonderful WHB" - THE radio station in KC......on the back would be the lyrics from a current Top 40 hit, and a photo of one of their dj's. Once the shopping on the square was done, we would get groceries and head home. A good day would include a stop at Burger Bar or Dog 'n Suds for lunch.
Now the farm where I grew up is part of the "town" school district, and people in the old neighborhood drive in five days a week for work. There's very little commerce on the square, and a lot of empty buildings. It's truly a different world.
Carrollton - thanks for the memories!

It's What Day Again??
We mowed the yard for the second time this afternoon. However, it was a much more "normal" mowing than last week, with no long johns or sweatshirts involved! But consider the wild weather the Midwest has been having - a friend who lives about an hour and a half SOUTH of us emailed that she slipped and fell yesterday morning on the ice and snow. This has been quite possibly the strangest spring weather I remember in my life.
We had a nice day, though I'm not sure how you make an interesting posting when the highlight of your day was plucking your eyebrows. :) We're watching the preview show of the NFL draft right now - a lot of big guys in nice suits being individually introduced right now.....we just turned it on, I think these intros are for the 25 top prospects. All kinds of speculation still on what the Chiefs will do with the #1 pick. No matter what they do, this coming season should be better than the last one!
One thing we've noticed with not working, it gets really hard to remember what day it is. We've tried to develop a weekday routine, but there's not the massive 8-hour-a-day schedule you have at work to keep your mind on track with the days. It didn't help that hubby looked out the front window this morning and commented that I forgot to pick up the newspaper last night. Our local paper publishes two times a week - the papers arrive on Tuesday evening and Thursday evening. It took me a while to process the entire train of thought before I told him that I was pretty sure we weren't supposed to get a paper last night. We still have no idea why it arrived, but my morning phone call from Mom confirmed that yes, it did come last night. I really don't need the local publisher messing up my mind any more than it already is!!!
A nice day and hopefully a good night's sleep to come!

Happy Little Clouds
When my kids were adolescents, we enjoyed watching a Public Television show hosted by an artist from Muncie, Indiana. It was an instructional show on painting landscapes. At some point in every show, the artist included what he called "happy little clouds" in the sky. The artist has long since left us, but I thought about him today as I saw only a few wispy little clouds in a bright blue sky.
Yessiree! We had blue skies today - bright sunshine - and hardly any cloud action. The temp topped out in the upper 50's with a little nippy breeze, but it was still a great day to walk outside.
It was a pretty routine day, not much out of the ordinary. So, as I sit here with my "thinking face" on, trying to decide what I should pontificate on today, hubby suggests that I rename the blog after him and spend my time telling everyone what a wonderful guy he is. That might not be a bad idea - he IS a great guy, and I'm reminded every day how lucky I am to have him in my life. Seriously, I would guess I'm in the minority because I absolutely cannot complain about the toilet seat being left up - ever. He vacuums, takes out the trash, helps with dishes and folding laundry - and sprays the henbit. And this afternoon, he was sweet enough that he gave up watching a movie on his computer because it was interfering with the movie I had already started on my computer....just too much for our wireless connection and my movie got "jerky" on the screen. To elevate him another notch, I should mention he was watching "Django Unchained", while I was watching "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2". Hmmmm. I have a feeling not that many other spouses would have been so kind.
He loves me in spite of all my quirks and shortcomings and tells me every day how much he loves me. I wouldn't trade that for all the "happy little clouds" in the sky!!

Rain, Rain, Go Away.......
.......Please, go away for a bit. Oh, and I'd really rather not see snow tonight either, if you don't mind......it's the last week of April, for goodness sake!!
Yes, it rained most of the night and most of the day. The good news was that it drifted between a gentle rain and a heavy drizzle. It wasn't enough to keep us from getting out of town for a bit. We needed a few things at Wallyworld and filled up at their gas station......gotta love their current discount of 15 cents per gallon off if you get gas with your Walmart credit card. Shameless commercial plug, I know, but I'm easily impressed!!
Actually, we needed to check on a couple of things at the store and ended up replacing our coffeemaker. The old one was still working - if you don't mind lukewarm coffee for waking up. We happen to prefer HOT coffee, thank you very much. We'll see tomorrow how that works.
I'm always somewhat surprised how certain days trigger certain thoughts. I actually felt like the drizzly weather was appropriate today........four years ago, I lost a cousin who was more like a big brother to me to an unexpected heart attack. It happened on his 68th birthday. I miss him.
Nothing out of the ordinary today, no drama, just a nice calm day......and a fresh episode of NCIS and Gibbs. A good day indeed!

Happy Monday!
What a nice weekend it was! The weather was decent......it was pretty windy on Saturday later on. But early, luckily it was calm enough for hubby to get the henbit sprayed.
Some of you may be asking yourself: "What is henbit?" Well, that would be the Missouri equivalent to kudzu. Even if you're not from the south, you've probably heard of kudzu - it's ability to take over, well, pretty much everything. Henbit is the same in north central Missouri. It doesn't get very tall and has a purple blossom that can actually fool you into thinking it's pretty. But it expands.......everywhere......comes up where we have only bark, comes up IN the flower pots that only have potting soil in them, everywhere you look in the yard..........it wouldn't surprise me to see the nasty stuff come up in the driveway! Those "pretty" purple blossoms evidently produce hundreds of thousands of seeds....and they must blow around in the slightest of breezes. That's the only explanation I have for the rampant invasion. So I endorse all henbit spraying that gets done in our yard!
Speaking of our yard, we discovered Sunday afternoon that we've evidently had an addition (or additions) to our population. Hubby almost stepped on a baby rabbit who had been enjoying a snack in the yard - Baby Bunny had curled up and tried to make himself invisible. He realized he wasn't successful when I petted him, and he scatted off underneath our front porch. Would be interesting to know just how many are under there! Luckily we have nice, tight new lattice surrounding the porch - hopefully that means none of the neighborhood cats are small enough to squeeze through!
Today was a little breezy, but we still opted to take our daily walk outside. It was invigorating. I enjoy these days. Did I mention we have snow in the forecast tomorrow? I think Mother Nature has had a memory lapse on what month this is - it's been more like March!
Life has been pretty routine these past few days......but I enjoy that when the routine includes good weather and time outside. I'd never last in northern Alaska!!!

The Sun'll Come Out.....
..........Today! Yay! Oh, yes - blue skies and all. So it was still pretty chilly and windy. But it was sunny!
Speaking of it being chilly, I'm trying to remember if ever before I've had to bundle up in layers (including long johns!) to mow the yard........I don't think so, but we sure did today. The grass was so tall we raised the mower deck before starting. It looks good, it felt good to get it done, we'll have to do it again sooner than normal with the mower deck back at a normal height. To my surprise, I didn't have to shed any layers of clothing during the mowing - I figured I would get heated up, but that didn't happen.
It was a good, productive day. I've said it before, but the sunshine energizes me (and, I guess logically, the clouds make me want to hibernate!). I feel good about what I've accomplished today, which in my book makes this day a success. I even managed to switch my number to a new cellphone without wailing and gnashing of teeth!
Yes, ma'am, it was a successful day!
Now, take a minute to hug those close to you and tell them how much you appreciate them. Life's too short and too precious - let people know they're special to you!
Have a good weekend - talk to you next week!

Enough, Already!!
Okay, Mama Nature, I don't know what's causing your mood, but enough already!! I enjoyed the sunshine and warmer weather we had earlier - but this cold rain, wind, thunder and lightning has grown old. I know I'm not the only one who's tired of the weather, but this is really putting my mood in the toilet!! And it's making it difficult for me to think of positive things. My apologies!
No matter what it's like here, it's always worse somewhere else. A college friend who lives in Chickasha, OK, posted a photo on Facebook last night of her dog cowering in the corner of the shower - from her description of their weather last night, that was a smart place to be. Another Facebook friend in the Sandhills of Nebraska is talking about snow. So........buck up, girl! It could be worse!
I got a bad case of cabin fever this afternoon. We got out for awhile, walked at the inside track, got groceries, checked another local store. It helped. I haven't even felt like cooking this week, so anyone who knows me will agree that my mood's off kilter! Oh! I did get a deal on some marinated turkey breasts at the grocery store. That was cause for joy.
I'm hoping for a really good night's sleep and a better weather day tomorrow. We're forecasted to hit the 60's.....of course, we've had that forecast the last couple of days and just didn't come anywhere close to that temp. We'll cross our fingers for tomorrow!

A Stormy Day
We've had a stormy day - may quiet down some this evening, but not in my world!!! After some lightning and a couple of electricity burps this afternoon, my computer doesn't seem to be happy with me. The past month or so, Internet Explorer seems to have issues with my keyboard......typing emails, comments on Facebook, or my blog are all exercises in futility - I never know when a keystroke will "take" or when it won't.
Trying to be a resourceful techie, I have downloaded both Mozilla Firefox and Google to my computer. I've been using Firefox with great success. Tonight, however, it tells me it has issues with my cookies. I made sure cookies were enabled and cleared my cache as directed. Being a firm believer in giving the computer a "boot" when it's misbehaving, I even did that. Some issues resolved, but Blogspot still won't let me in from Firefox. So, I'm pounding the keys with great frustration as every 3rd or 4th keystroke fails to register. Grrrr!! (And it probably doesn't help that these spring storms give me a killer headache)
Okay, enough bellyaching! It was a quiet day, and we had absolutely no responsibilities forcing us to go outside. It was great! You have to appreciate when your life allows that.
It will be a happier day tomorrow :)

Hello, Wimpy - It's Tuesday!
I came to a conclusion about myself today - I'm a wimp. When I was a young, brash 23, I organized a day-long workshop for somewhere around 100 people - I handled the publicity, pre and same day registration, took care of morning and afternoon coffee/tea breaks (and, I might add, did a major burn of my hand with boiling water for hot tea), and made sure there was on-site lunch. I rocked, thanks to a lot of reliable help.
Today, however, I wore myself out over the simple task of arranging to roll my Simple IRA from my "kindly and gently let go" former employer into my larger Deferred Annuity. I simply did not want my meager savings scattered here and yonder. Believe me, the rollover was not as "simple" as the IRA!!! It took me four phone calls and a trip to the insurance agent's office to get the whole thing accomplished......and I was worn out! See what I mean about being a wimp??? No way 4 phone calls should have worn me out.
Did I mention I was also cold all day? We were in the mid 40's, but I've so enjoyed those 70+ degree days we've had. Plus, it was cloudy and damp. The grass is out there growing, but I really wasn't into pulling on a pair of long johns to mow the yard. Besides, I got a new "Food Network" magazine in today's mail. Never let it be said I don't have my priorities straight!

Sad Monday
This is the type of day that makes all of us shake our collective heads and wonder what our world is coming to. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those at the Boston Marathon tragedy.
The weather seemed to mirror the tone of the day - cloudy, chilly, generally dreary. And yet, we got our lawnmower back from being serviced! Hopefully we'll have a decent day while we can still find our way through the forest that is our yard to start that mower!! Hubby has said he's worried about my getting lost while mowing - maybe he'll attached a bicycle flag to me so he knows where I am. :)
The weekend was nice. I finally gave in to my need to see the grandkids yesterday. We had a nice visit with the two in Grain Valley - but sadly, we missed the two in Blue Springs (basketball game in Shawnee Mission). I feel bad that we missed those two, but we'll catch up with them another day when they can have our full attention. As it was, we came home totally worn out from the full-of-energy 4-year-old granddaughter! She never slows down....also never runs out of anything to say. Her 14-year-old brother is so calm and laid back comparatively! There's never a dull moment there........I reminded her mama that a "few years ago" when SHE was the same age, I also had a 3-year-old and a baby. I think it made her tired just to think about it!!
At any rate, it's another wonderful week - hope you all enjoy it as much as I plan to.

Happy Birthday & Congratulations!
First of all, Happy Birthday my terrific stepdaughter - hope you celebrate well!
Not as nice a day as I had hoped, but we are ending with sunshine. Looking forward to warmer temps this weekend.
It was a fairly ordinary day here......cleaned the house, used a bunch of leftovers by making a yummy chicken stir fry for lunch. Heard that my cousin in western Kansas came through his sugery okay, tumors removed, chemo port inserted. He'll be in the hospital at least a week.
Also kept tabs today via Facebook on our adorable 7-year-old granddaughter who was participating in a dance competition in Overland Park - a good day.....4th place overall in her trio, special judges' award, and a full ride scholarship to summer dance camp. She's back tomorrow with the ballet group compeition.
We've discovered even with our unstructured schedule that we look forward to the weekend. Silly, perhaps, but still nice to deviate from the routine! That's about all that's on my mind......everyone have a wonderful weekend, and I'll talk to you next week!!

Hmmmmmm
After quite a few really nice days, we've gone back into a Midwest Slump.....dreary, cold, blustery. Just not nice at all, which results in my brain going into hibernation mode! Regardless of how much energy I had when I got up this morning, it went away fast!! I've been listless and yawning for the past couple of hours. Bring back my sunshine!!
It's a little hard to concentrate this evening - I have a cousin in western Kansas going into surgery in just a few minutes for colon cancer. He's just a few months older than me. I'm also keeping his sister in my thoughts, as I'm sure she will be the one to take care of him afterward. It reminds me to count my own blessings, and remember that life is precious.
Youngest daughter and I had a long phone conversation earlier. She doesn't usually say a lot about her work, other than answering my questions about what she does. But today she was sharing her frustrations with inaccurate perceptions by her co-workers. I can relate to the problem of people who share work space with you but neglect to get to know you on a personal basis. I don't necessarily think we need to be "besties" with the people we work with. But, getting acquainted with your co-workers and learning what makes them tick I believe is a key to peace in the workplace. For instace, everyone has expressions (facial or verbal) that can be misinterpreted if you aren't perceptive and receptive to learning who they are. The same goes for overall physical expressions - is this a person who just naturally seems to cross their ams, or is the arm-crossing a physical statement? For me, I'm a leaner. If I'm having a conversation while standing, I will invariably end up leaning on the nearest prop - door jamb, desk, whatever's handy. If I'm sitting during a work conversation, I tend to lean back and cross my arms. For many, that would be interpreted as shutting myself off to your comments. For me, though, that's settling back and basically embracing what's being said, pulling it in and taking time for consideration. Especially easy to misinterpret are others' "thinking faces".
That's about enough "heavy" stuff for tonight!! :) Hold your loved ones close and let them know how precious they are to you.

Girl Power!
It was a good day - drove to Higginsville for lunch with two of my favorite gal pals, two former co-workers. It was such fun to catch up and have some girl time......and share our lunches with one another! Thanks again for the invite!
It was very rainy today. There was a couple-hour break, and I was fortunate enough to drive home during that. The ground needs moisture so bad, we're glad to get it. But, it was the type of day to curl up and read a good book or watch a good movie......or go to lunch wit the girls! We've been having such beautiful weather - now the weathe gurus are pulling out the "S" word for tomorrow (you know.....that four-letter "S" word). Yuck. Not sure I want to face that!! But, it'll be gone soon if we do get some.....back to the 70's by Sunday.
Friends and family are such a wonderful blessing. Some friends are in our lives only for a season but still have a special place in our hearts years later. We need to remember to let all those who are in our hearts know how special they are to us - especially the ones closest to us we may inadvertently take for granted.

The Day Before The Storm......
....Or at least that's what the National Weather Service says. Of course, this is the Midwest in spring. The forecast is usually dicey. This was another nice day in the low 70's, though a bit windy at times.....quite a bit of sneezing at our house! Storms forecasted tonight, rain and falling temps tomorrow.
It was, all in all, a pretty routine day. Which was nice. We did have coffee with Ronald (McDonald) this morning. We decided to do our daily walk inside to stay out of the wind and the allergens. I did a bunch of sorting, cleaning, and throwing out this afternoon. Sometimes a purging of physical items is good for the soul.
Reality check of the day: at least one of the 14-year-old grandsons has grown 3-4" since Christmas, and his voice has become incredibly deep. It sounded like I was talking with my 34-year-old son (his uncle) - it was amazing!!
This evening on the phone I've listened to son's tale of incorrect auto parts, diagnosed a jammed finger and advised the "fix", and set up a lunch date for tomorrow. I'm looking forward to that. Other than that, it's been quiet.
Just another "LG" day!

M-I-C-K-E-Y
A wondeful part of my early childhood is gone - RIP, Annette. I remember as a very small child watching the Mouseketeers every afternoon. Annette, of course, was my favorite. I loved the "babies", Karen and Cubby - I even had their paper dolls. Some I didn't like as well - mainly some of the girls.......probably because they would occasionally take the spotlight off Annette.
I've always loved TV - in fact, my parents attribute my learning the alphabet at a very young age to Robert Q. Lewis - I was able to recognize the "Q" on my blocks and distinguished it from the "O". It was a sad day when our TV died before I was old enough to start school, because at that point we didn't have the funds to replace it.
In fact, I believe I was mid-way through 5th grade before that TV was replaced. That dearth of entertainment did, of course, give me lots of quality time with my parents. Last time I checked, I could still kill in a game of Tiddly-Winks! But that 5th grade year was oh! so hard.......there was a new TV show on that fall that absolutely everyone talked about on the school bus - "The Beverly Hillbillies". I felt SO left out and socially abused.
I was so excited when that TV came into my life. Indeed, "The Beverly Hillbillies" was a terrific show, and now I could partcipate in the bus discussions. Torrey Southwick and Ol' Gus were a staple, soon replaced by "Where The Action Is" as my adolescent after-school staple. We only had 3 stations then - and only for about 10 months out of the year. When it got into the summer doldrums, the heat was too much for the TV and it simply would only have a picture for a few short minutes before it would get blurry and fade.
After Charlie O. Finley moved the A's to Oakland (the bum!) and the Kansas City Royals came into being (1968), I had to be very inventive. During the heat of summer - and the heat of the baseball season - I always made sure I had an extra battery for my little transistor radio. Either outside on the front porch or in the kitchen, I would listen to the game until it was time for my favorite player to bat, then I would huriedly turn on the TV to see what he would do. It was a finely-timed dance.
I remember the times of hauling the TV 20 miles to the repairman when a tube would burn out. We only made that "long" trip to town once a week, so we always hoped the tube could be replaced while we did our weekly grocery shopping. Sometimes, I felt like that TV was my best friend.
I've digressed enough - thank you, Annette, for so many wonderful memories of childhood and a simpler, more wholesome time - "M-I-C see ya real soon K-E-Y why? because we like you! M-O-U-S-E"!

LG
Or, as the commercial say, "life's good". I'm 60, I'm unemployed, there are no - and I mean NOOOO - jobs to be had. I should be steeped in anxiety. But I'm not. This has been such a good two months home with hubby.
We started our married life with him working in Northern Iowa while I maintained our home in North Central Missouri......for five and a quarter years!! It sounds so long, but it really went by quickly in the big picture. Somehow, I think this "us" time is cosmic payback for those early years.
We have fun just hanging out together, doing things around the house, now with the warmer weather doing yard work. He finished spraying the yard demolition area this morning. I started an experiment this afternoon - container gardening. I don't know if it will work or not, but it was fun getting my hands in the potting soil this afternoon - we have seeds planted for beets, peas, spinach, and zucchini. As it gets warmer, we will get a nice tomato plant and two sweet peppers.
We topped off a luciously warm day taking the family across the street out for pizza - a thank-you for hauling off our brush from the yard project. Everyone should have neighbors like them.
Hubby's snoozing on the sofa, I'm enjoying a glass of wine, National Geographic is on the TV. Tomorow's another day and promises to be another warm one - I feel so alive with the warmer, sunnier days. Yep - Life's Good!

Reflections
Today was a day for reflection and circumspection. I actually got up at a reasonable time, thanks to the alarm. On a warm, sunny day, Mom and I traveled to Meadville for a family funeral......the next-to-last survivor of my Dad's family/generation.
We stopped in Chillicothe on the way home, and Mom treated me to lunch at DQ - yummy chicken strips with gravy and hot fudge sundae! After I got home, hubby decided to do more work on our latest "demolition" project - tearing out that lilac bush and all its accoutrements. Thanks to some help from the neighbors across the street, we got basically everything cut down to a short stump/root. We loaded the debris from today and Tuesday and it was hauled to the city dump site to be made into mulch. Now, we're trying to get the energy to nuke something for supper!
But back to the morning - this person whose life we celebrated was so special. I hope she knew how special she was to everyone. She was a letter writer - during World War II she wrote to all her first cousins in the service, which was a good group. She also started a pen pal relationship with the British war bride of a neighbor boy/soldier. That relationship continued until the war bride's death last summer, and two of her children were at today's services. The hospice chaplain gave a wonderful talk focusing on her sense of humor, which was legendary. In addition to her own three wonderful children and their families, there were 15 foster children who found comfort in her home. She was truly a person to look up to, to admire, and to emulate.
The special bond between the two of us was that of gender - after she was born into my father's extended family, there was a 28-year female drought until I came along. I was so special - for a couple of months until the next girl was born (ironically, her daughter), then another, and another.......you get the picture! My "princess" rank was short-lived.
This service was truly a celebration of life, more than any I've ever seen. RIP Norma, we all miss you but know you're watching over us.

Hump Day
For those in a normal Monday-Friday workplace, it's Hump Day. That loses some of its oomph when you aren't working! Though I can't really say we aren't working. We've developed a pretty decent daily routine, including doing a 30-minute podcast five days a week. (For the curious, go to richthedj.blogspot.com and use the link - it's pretty doggoned good, especally if you like Big Band music.)
Yesterday was a busy day, with a morning trip to Chillicothe for mandatory Career Cener check-in, plus a workshop for hubby. We stocked up on just about everything in WalMart, then grabbed lunch at DQ. Yummy! We traveled home, put everything away, went to vote in our local election, then came home to do our daily podcast. My car was getting an oil change and a replacement wiper blade (thank you so much, March snowstorm!), and we picked it up mid afternoon. Rich got ambitious and did some work on a tangled mess that once upon a time was a nice lilac bush (that has been invaded with a walnut sapling, elephant bush, wild grapevine, and who knows what else).....it's a work in progress. We were both ready for evening, though I spent a lot of time on the phone.
That said, we enjoyed a much calmer day today! And still, with the calm, we did our podcast, 3 loads of laundry, some housecleaning, and other odds and ends including our daily walk.
Exciting?--no. But just the way I like it. :)
Drama is highly overrated.

Lucky Thirteen
Thirteen years ago today, I met my Prince Charming. I know not everyone believes in fairy tales, but I always did. I always knew that somewhere, out there, was my Prince. And I'm so grateful every day that I finally found him!
Early in our relationship, he told me that being with him would always be fun - and he was so right! Even now, being unemployed together is fun.
Love you, Sweetie - here's to many more happy years together!

Non-Manic Monday
Happy April Fool's Day - what a nice weekend it was! Saturday was dreary and rainy all day. But we were snug at home, smelling a yummy pasta bake in the oven. I enjoy kitchen time so much, it's a major stress reliever for me. I tried to "healthy it up" by using turkey summer sausage, fresh carrots and zucchini, and whole wheat pasta, topped with part-skim mozzarella. Next time out, I may try using canned tomatoes and herbs instead of canned spaghetti sauce....baby steps!
Yesterday was such a nice day - sunny and warm. My first time this season not wearing a jacket to church......though I did think the ones wearing sandals were pushing it a bit!! We walked in the park yesterday afternoon, got a cone from McD's (did you know they're half price on Sunday???....only 50 cents!) and cruised around town for awhile.
I'm excited for our trip out of town tomorrow - yes, I've hit total "dorkdom". But it's been four weeks since we've journeyed anywhere - needless to say, my "stock up at wallyworld" list is huge. It will be a good trip.
Pretty mundane stuff, which is exactly how I like it! No drama, please and thank you. I guess I can't expect to wax eloquent every day!!
